Thinking of fitting Shimano 105 Compact Chainset 50/34 HOLLOWTECH II crankset to my Marin Point Reyes as it's used as a road bike only. Anyone have any reasons as to perhaps why it won't be possible? Bike currently fitted with Shimano Deore, 48/36/26 with HollowTech and Octalink

Will it clear the chainstay OK?

That's probably my main concern but I've no way of finding out unless someone has carried out a similar swap-over. If it does clear the chainstay then I'm sure there will be enough adjustment on the front mech to cater for the extra two teeth on the big chainring.

Suck it and see I guess - I have an FSA compact triple on my old GT Timberline which clears OK, I think with a 48T. One reason why you shouldn't is that HT2 BBs tend to wear out quickly compared to HT mk1s.

Even if the arms clear the chainstays, you'll probably find the large ring will saw through them if its anywhere near close

It's got a 68mm shell presumably? Definitely won't work on a 73.

Personally, I can't see the point. You're only gaining 2 teeth on the big ring and loosing 2 off the middle. How long do you spend in top gear? Not very long, if at all I imagine......

How about just a closer ratio cassette?

peter has it right. Unless you are spinning out 48/11 there is little point.

Reduced Q-factor if you're into such things, and better chainline, lighter too.

No really doing it for the extra long gear, it's just that I can't find a decent all[b][u] black quality 48 tooth mountain bike chainset out there. The 105/Ultegra black compacts are nice. Anyway, does the hollowtech BB not come with spacers to push the cranks out a bit? Maybe I'm wrong. It's a 68mm shell, btw.

My FSA Gossamer 50/34 would not go anywhere near to fitting on a hybrid or mtb as the inner ring hit the stays. Once upon a time we were allowed to choose our Q factor and chain line with a variety of axle lengths but external BBs put a stop to such freedoms...

The spacers you get with MTB cranks are to allow the same chainset to be used with either a 68 or 73 bottom bracket shell. Road chainsets do not come with these.

Thanks MTB fix, and all the other guys, think my question has now been answered by the former. Don't want to go buying something that doesn't fit just to have to sell it on again.
