can you buy it separately? the missus bust her mech hanger today on a gnarly alpine descent, and bent the intermediate hanger thingy ( i dont know the correct term for it) as well.

Yep, but it's expensive for what it is. IIRC an xtr one is £25, check the shimano tech docs of your mech to find out the partcode you need.
