Quite new to these shadow mechs.
The bit of the mech which is supposed to interface with the frame misses it on both my bikes . What am I doing wrong?
Also what does the torx bolt do?

"misses" in what way?
The torx holds the b-knuckle ('bracket' in your image) in place and allows the mech to pivot around it a little. It's supposed to be removable so the mech can be used on direct-mount frames.

I think you need to winding it back more before tightening it down.
Can you post a photo?

Will try a picture tonight. Just checked my spearfish ,that one is ok. It's my 2000 mount vision that's a problem.

in the meantime, just try rotating the whole mech clock-wise until it engages...
