I'm lead to believe that this won't work - mixing 9 & 10 speed.

I don't fully understand why as I've run a mixture of 8 & 9 speed for years with the deciding factor being the shifter i.e. an 8 speed shifter running a 9 speed mech and vice versa.

The ratio of the amount of cable pulled by the shifter, to the amount of sideways movement of the chain is different on Shimano DynaSys 10 speed MTB stuff to everything else. Hence 1x9 shifter needs Mega9 or roadie rear derailleur. No 9 speed clutch mechs as far as I know.

this is true. But ive read a lot about combining the shimano 10 spd mech and sram 9 spd shifter. the ratio is very close. so much so that some people claim it works perfectly as is. others state that adding a 6mm shim to the cable clamp will sufficiently alter the ratio to make it spot on. mostly ive read about using the Zee Shadow+, but was hoping to hear from anyone using the medium cage XT shadow+

10-speed Shimano mech works perfectly on a 9-speed Shimano shifter, with just a wee spacer to change the cable ratio. Not aware of any other way to make it go on 9-speed.

To answer the question, either works, though the Shimano short cage is very short and does struggle with the most "stretchy" suspension designs. Rare, though.

seems that with an easy adaption the shadow+ 10 speed clutch mechs will be fine in a 9 speed set up (sram shifters)
Im now hearing issues of reliability with the clutch mechs
