Maybe I am missing something obvious - but my XT/XTR hubs have flat for spanner one side, but not the other. Maybe I am missing something obvious but wonder how to service the bearings with using something brutal? It is cassette side that has no visible means of using a spanner.

you put a 5mm hex key in the end. offside, don't undo drive side.

To remove the freehub you need a 14 mm allen key. There are good exploded diagrams on the Shimano website.
