my old sid xc forks are causing me some grief. they're way to stiff, and there's plenty of mud got in there and leaking out the stanchions. they move up and down the required 80mm approx., but the motion is pretty awful.
any clues on where/how/what to do? thanks.
2 options
1) ditch them and get something new
2) send them to tftuned to get them properly serviced (have they ever been serviced? - since if not then go for option 1)
You can pull them apart quite easily, there'll be a guide on t'interweb somewhere. Worth doing the seals while you're in there, tracking them down could be difficult. Nowt to lose!
they are bound to need bushings, and the rebound adjusters normaly freeze solid and if so costs a lot to put right.
thus let a pro like tftuned check them out and before they do the work they will give you a call to let you know the cost and ask if it's still worth doing.
it's easy doing the basics, but if they are that old and havn't been properly maintained each year since then they are likely to be ripe for the bin (since it may cost you more to have internals replaced than to buy a cheap new pair that will be as good or probably better in terms of performance)
Why waste the time/money sending them to TF, if they need bushings and the rebound's buggered 10 seconds without removing them from the bike will tell you!
If that is the case, I'd probably look to replace them, a TF service will be >£100 with postage, and that's not worth it.
thanks for the tips. £100 service made me chuckle so won't be doing that.
just serviced them myself today and refilled with lighter weight oil. smooothe.
can't get away from the fact that the stanchions are more scarred than mickey rourke, and the seals aren't good enough for a nuclear plant, but...they're a lot quieter than before and i've got full 80mm bounce. nicely. might only need to do it every few weeks, too.
and it's saturday night.
