It looks like I might be shifting some stuff - or rather trying to - in the near future. Is it better in general, to try and sell complete bikes or break them and sell the components? I know it can depend on what is in question so as an idea of what is in the frame - a Scandal with Reba Races, XT drivetrain, LX disc brakes, Raceface stem, Thomson post, Bel Air, XT wheels on 717s (I think) and a Surly 1x1, XT on 717s, LX cranks, RC31s, FSA Post, Bel Air etc and a finally a Merida 901 road bike
There's no junk in there but the question remains..... is it better to split than try to sell the whole lot?
IME, it depends if you are prepared to deal with extra time and hastle of dealing with many people/parcels/cheques/emails in selling the bits for a bit of extra money, or the relatively 'clean' and simple one-off sale of the complete bike for a little bit less money.
Also, as you say, it may also depend if you have a couple of 'boutique items' which may get a better return if sold on their own, rather than being smeared into the complete package of a fully assembled bike.
A question to be filed under '...it depends...' ๐
Just to get you going I would be interested in the wheels, could you let me have details, and maybe the post, what size is it?
Sorry to have hijacked your thread, but this may help,
Alex
The post is a 27.2 with layback and the wheels......erm need to check but not just yet. I'll keep your details Alex and when/if the time comes I'll drop you a line. ๐
what size frames?
You'll make more money by splitting (assuming decent component but your list seems to be just that) but it's more work obviously.
The more expensive the bike, generally the more true that is - people rarely want to fork out top prices for a complete bike that's spec'd for someone else's preferences.
I'd look to guarantee sale of the most expensive component, the frame, before I started splitting.
And if youre looking to really maximise your return, stick it on ebay not here as even with ebay/paypal fees stuff goes there for silly money. See "prices in classifieds" thread for general consensus on the difference between fleabay and forum classifieds.
