I've posted about my stolen Trek 4500 already, but I need a replacement, and am looking for either recommendations or someone to sell me one! I was really happy with my bike (took me long enough to get it right, so you'd hope so) so I've got a good idea of what I want.
I'm really after a pretty conventional hardtail mountain bike with half decent forks (I liked my Rockshox Toras very much). Nothing too hefty. Mostly for roads and tracks. I'll probably put fairly slick tyres on it - had Specialized Crossroads ones before, which I like.
Mine was an 18 inch frame. It has to be quite short, with high handlebars, as I have a back problem that means I can't reach too far forwards.
Brakes: I'm happy with cable disk brakes, for the sake of being able to replace with generic parts (I cycled round Ghana for a month recently - don't fancy my chances of finding appropriate hoses out there, for example!). For the sake of compatibility with my girlfriend's bike, I'd like 6 bolt disks and a square tapered bottom bracket, and even brakes that take the same pads - so cheap Shimano ones. When we're travelling together, it's good to only have to carry one set of spares.
I need to be able to attach a hefty pannier rack for touring.
I don't want a bike that looks too snazzy or colourful. I'd like it to get as little attention as possible in general.
Moon on a stick, I know. Took me 6 years to build a bike I was completely happy with, so I can't expect to find one overnight, but I have to start looking.
