When I undo the quick release the seat post just drops fully into the frame.

When done up there is no slippage at all, it is a steel frame with a carbon post.

Previous experience tells me that even when released a seat post should stay put.

Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated (I am more concerned with a carbon seat post than I would be with other materials!).

Cheers

No.

Some posts slip straight away, some sit there.

Struggling to think of any bikes I've owned where it stayed up. Think it did on my 97 Kilauea, but thats it.

Some just dive. Some stay up. Saddle bags make it worse. I wouldnt worry if its stable when done up.

May be worth putting a dab of carbon paste in there?

I am struggling to see the problem here

To me it just shows that the frame is releasing as it should and the post has no sludge around it to hold it in place so it drops as it should. No issues IMO.

It may be fractionally oversized but if it's not slipping it's not an issue.

If it happened to me I'd think two things. One, can I rock the post when the qr is closed? Does the bottom of the post move in the frame? And two, if that's okay, think how much money I found save with a rite-hite instead of an upy-downy post.
