Having just read the recent thread about dropper seatposts (which I intend to get one of) and the use of shims I have just had a thought.

If you use a shim am I right in saying that the effective insertion is only the length of the shim?

I'm sure I've used a fairly short shim on a seatpost before which i'm guessing is bad news.

yes, only the length of the shim.

as long as the shim goes a few cm below the top tube/seat tube/seat stay junction you should be ok.

Yup - most commercial shims will extend for several inches below the clamp IME ๐Ÿ™‚

USE shims are 100mm long IIRC
