You can't educate pork.
Well done. You saw a microscopically tiny gap, and you went for it.
"How does it work if it washes off with water? Surely your drivetrain will just be lube free at the first sight of rain? Or puddles."
If your chain is wet with water it is lubed - because water is a lubricant.
The original FS365 is a water-based rust inhibitor. And this is why the AFS allowed you to reapply on the move: splash through a puddle to clean the chain and then re-lube by squeezing the squid when the trail dries out a bit.
The UBS is different - it is water-soluble but needs a soft-brush to remove it from the chain. This is also why they supply the 50ml dropper bottle, which means you can relube if you're 50km from home and have been scrubbing the chain on wet heather all day before the sun comes out.
On Tuesday night's mucky ride I sprayed the singlespeed with UBS before setting out. Then rode for a couple of hours through the muck, drank a couple of beers and then cycled home in the rain. On parking the bike in the shed I sprayed the chain with UBS. With geared bike I'd have sprayed the frame with FS365 too.
I used to have to spend every weekend degreasing my drivetrain - but now I just use a brush and water and do it in a couple of minutes. My dermatitis has cleared up too!
To be fair to Scottoiler, bicycles are such a tiny part of their market (1 in 10 UK motorbikes have a Scottoiler system on them, and BMW offer BMW-branded Scottoiler kits!) that we aren't really worth the marketing effort.
Some times the obvious answer is the only answer.
But,
for a how-long-is-a-piece-of-string type question such as "how long does it last"
Its possibly more of a how long will it last on Jamie's bike in the conditions of rain, snow, mud, etc that Jamie uses his bike in, type of question?
But, how are we going to find that out?
Mine has arrived.. Going to degrease old black gunk off of it then apply....
Hoping for a gunk free drivechain for winter.
That's what I was advised, did it in a bottle of white spirit.
Yes white spirit bottle shaker is my preferred method.
Mine is coming tomorrow, which is not to shabby as we only just got the payment snafu sorted out today. I have some fenwicks knocking about, which is going in a old 500ml water bottle with a chain and shaken beforehand 8)
Anyone got a link to the offer?
its in the online shop, 2bottles for £xx then apply the discount code on checkout.
Motorcyclist's definition of a posh person- someone who uses scottoil in their scottoiler.
My 2 bottles just arrived.
Just in time for cleaning the bike after last night's sloppy mudfest of a ride!

Cheers, found it on the desktop, it didn't show up on the mobile site.
What's the difference between this and squirt? Not initialy planning on using it on the drivechain, just for keeping the mud from sticking to the rest of the bike.
How does it work if it washes off with water? Surely your drivetrain will just be lube free at the first sight of rain? Or puddles.
Lube on the surface doesn't matter much. It's inside the rollers that counts as that's where the wear actually occurs. Rain and puddles won't flush that out normally, though oil on the outer surface will suck crud in and grind away.
Thus I suggest... Squirt. Or any similar decent wax based lube, but this one is very effective. Surface is just wax so doesn't suck crud though flakes off as you ride, but inside the wax stays in place for longer.
Though you may get rust spots on the surface, but it doesn't matter. Disappears next ride, or just reapply tiny amount of squirt.
Is there a way to change the site so it bills in gbp rather than dollars?

so just degreased my chain, and then applied it to the frame and my chain on my DH bike...its now sparkly clean so lets see what the minging conditions of gawton bring tomorrow!!
1st impressions are that the spray makes it use a lot more than necessary and if you are not careful it will get on the discs, so for the frame etc i may just coat a sponge and wipe over, I decanted some into an old empty finishline bottle for the chain application, worked well.
fwiw i only get dollars to look at too, even on the uk flag and again following jamie's link...

I noticed that, especially outside if it's a bit windy. Goes everywhere. I put some plastic bags over my rotors/calipers, but reckon it still went on there. I assume, theoretically, it'll wash off any spots tomorrow on the first puddle....which I guess means all the rest gets washed off as well...erm...I still don't get how this works 😀
Anyway, going to decant some into a little bottle for dribbling onto the chain, and top marks to Scottoiler for getting me a replacement bottle in the post. Hopefully this one won't look like it was treated like a football.
Applied mine inside the house.... It's now dripped the floor (luckily tiled), yes the whole it washes off pads and discs with water but makes a decent chain lubricant don't make any sense to my tiny mind.. Still it's worth a punt.
You can set the nozzle to accurate spray as well as indiscriminate spray, but I've done the same and reverted to using a drip bottle to apply it to the chain at the pedal end. My mate puts it on his stanchions too, but I'm sticking with fork juice for that just now.
For those interested, I bought one of these for 99p for the chain.

Must be a cookie thing. I could only make it go to gbp by going into incognito mode. Cheers for the code btw.

Did as instructed, and just rinsed afterwards with water...well, maybe a bit of mild sponge action. In use, and after a few puddles, things did feel ok I guess.
I should add round my way the mud is very sticky.
So far it seems to be identical to Muc Off Bike Spray to me. It makes my anodised finish look really nice (presumably PTFE), but I've never considered using Bike Spray as a general drive chain lube before, so I guess I'll persevere.
Still monitoring.
I ended up surfing instead of riding so it's going to get tested tomorrow morning...
So I tried it today. Firstly its a pain to apply to the frame without getting drips onto the disc if you have to manhandle the bike out of your house like I have to... So sponge technique from on! It didn't contaminate it to bad though as I rinsed it off with water/rag it just made the brake a bit crap for my 1st descent then it squealed a bit then went back to normal operating after 5mins.
Got filthy dirty on a ride.
Quick rinse with the hose and it's sparkly and clean no sponge/brush needed. The drivechain remains absolutely gunk free which was the main reason for purchasing it, and it was quiet and squeak free whilst riding.
So overall I like it. I can't see me swapping back to normal lubes anytime soon.
Another update.
Really claggy muddy ride today, well a section of it was. Got back and rinsed off with a hosepipe and a bit of mild agitation. Everything came up lovely. Really nice not to have to deal with the black paste/old lube I used to get with Finish Line wet. In use the drivetrain seems to run well, not excessively noisy etc.
I do think I need to be careful of the spray, as I reckon you could go through it very quickly if you're not careful. I am doing the chain with a little dropper bottle, so that should conserve some liquid.
That aside, very impressed still.
Would agree with Jamie. I've used it in some claggy mud and my chain is 100% black gunk free... Looks like new in fact.
Like Jamie I use a dropper to apply to chain and sponge for applying to the frame so it doesn't spray over discs etc.
I've already bought another 2 bottles with the discount code.
Loving the stuff
I have used Scotioler for 5 + years, I have found it is amazing stuff, drivechain is shiny, reduced wear (I only just changed the chain on my canyon strive , its 2 + years old and was only just stretched. )
I fs 365 every ride, it sounds expensive but £15 for a 5 litre bottle usually lasts me 6 months, chains are far more expensive and limited time cleaning
I've just seen this:

Seems they've won some award with the UBS Stuff.... tried it myself towards the end of last year and gotta say it seems to work pretty well, haven't had it for long enough to say anything about long-term but so far my bike looks better than ever! 🙂
Picked this up myself, not tried it in anger yet, but good to hear the feedback
Does anyone who's gone from rock n roll lubes to this have any comments? I use rnr and find my drivetrain stays fairly clean after reapplying lube and rubbing it over with a cloth does this stuff do the job any better? Also how is longevity and performance while out riding?
Well I don't know about rnr Lube, but I usually put some UBS on before I go out on a ride (about 2 hours usually cross-country) and haven't needed to re-apply during the ride so far. Usually spray more on after I've washed the bike, but can't say I do that after every ride...
Sprayed it on my bike before a motorway drive with it on the rear rack and it arrived filthy, you could see the bits of the frame that hadn't been coated as they were much less grimy. So it doesnt work against that kind of muck.
Only got one ride on it in the mud and it washed off, suppose I should apply it to half the frame and then compare.
Been using a week or so on road bike, but only on transmission not frame etc.
It does keep the transmission clean, maybe not quite as slick shifting as my usual finish line wet ceramic lube and it does take a while to get the hang of application - I spray on the chain while holding a rag behind to keep the overspray down, will probably decant some into a dropper bottle to keep waste down.
So far, so good - will see how it lasts.
Been using it for a couple of weeks on the drivetrain, just as a give it a go it's cheap enough option.
have to say I'm liking it. clean chain, no squeaking out on rides. simply spray it on before a ride, quick hose down after ride, dry off and reapply before sticking the bike in the shed. repeat for next ride.
No sticky black horrible degreaser defying gunk on the chain and chainrings, everything runs sweet.
why did we not have this 20 years ago?
Bought some at the EWS last year, followed the instructions, clean bike, spray on everywhere (not discs) wipe with a rag, leave to dry. Ride bike, get muddy, wash off, bike comes up clean, reapply, repeat.
It worked well for me but I can't buy it locally so when I ran out I didn't get any more. Will order some more..
im several filthy rides in now and my drivechain is squeaky clean with still no hint of black gunk...love the stuff.
Road bike was covered in an evil looking coat of "the dreaded black gunk" and garnished with a sprinking of road salt last night - quick splosh with a bucket of warm water and it was gleaming.
Can't see quite "how" it works but it certainly does work 😀
Up here in Scotland we are experts on grease and oil 🙂
I've been using it for a few weeks now and I'm impressed. There is no build up of black gunk, it washes off easily and does indeed appear to lubricate the drivetrain. I've found that it took a few applications to get things up to speed and that a gentle brushing of the cassette post ride helps. Also, I use a dropper bottle for the chain and protect the discs when I reapply as it's very runny. All in all, it seems a great product that does everything I need it to do, i.e. one product, instead of several. Everything is left beautifully clean. I still use Fenwicks suspension lube spray on the stanchions, dropper post and shock, mind you.
i don't get how it doesn't just wash off in splashy riding conditions though?
