[#3756382]

Evening all. I've been offered a Scott Ransom 30 full build for, what I think is, a pretty reasonable price, though I know next to nothing about the frames.

I've heard quite a few bad things about the alu ones, mainly snapping parts and the shock being less than reliable. Are they really all that bad? I know that it tends to be the negative reviews which do the rounds.

I know that the frame in question has had a chainstay replaced (after cracking) but the shock has had a service pretty recently too.

I'm buying the bike predominantly for the Mega, if I like it, I might keep it after.

Any advice RE Ransoms would be veeery welcome.
Cheers

There are three or four people I know with Ransoms, and everyone of them had an absolute nightmare with the Scott shock. I've been out on spins where one of them had had the shock seize up more than once.

That said, one of them has done the Mega twice on one, without issues. He was running an RP23 on it, mind.

Hmmmm, that's not overly encouraging.

Surely it can't have been and RP23, the Ransom has a bizarre pull shock.....you can only run the OEM Scott Equalizer.

I'm worried about resale value too, for a bike that received such positive reviews, they get a lot of negative press.

It's a shame the shock can't be replaced with something a bit less abstract.....alas, maybe 'tis not to be.

Just to balance out the bad reviews.
I built up a 2nd hand carbon ransom about a year ago, it has the equalizer shock. I think the alu ones are a bit heavy in comparison.

I ride in varied terrain in the basque country, lots of drops, rock gardens, big mountains. Best bike I´ve ever had and it makes me want to take on 2 hour climbs just to enjoy the descents.

Never had a spot of bother with either the frame or the shock.I did read a few horror stories and as a result I picked up a spare shock just in case (cost me 35quid), although that one did need a service. It can also be replaced by a modded DHX5, saw that on a few forums.

People will write a bad review if their bike breaks, if it doesn´t then they´ll be out riding.

Hi, I have a ransom with a Fox dhx 5 air modded with a rp23 air can, it works better than the stock shock, but I had very few problems with the equalizer as long as you get a yearly service. I have it built up to a 28 pound bike & it is perfect...

Nope, regular type shock.

RP23 or as above modded DHX air with rp23 air can is a killer upgrade!
Best to look for a carbon frame though IMO.. will take all the abuse you can ever throw at it!

Deffo an RP23 - the OEM shock isn't pull liek some of their other bikes, so a standard shock can go on. Aluminium ones are a bit heavy, as someone said, but they're a capable bike, outside those issues.
