[#367032]

On the night ride last night, we all swapped bikes.

Apparently mine felt like an £80 halford special ( its an 06 Genius). everyone thought the rear was soft and that it did not have any damping, compression or rebound.

I thought that everyone elses ( spesh enduros / FSR ) felt solid, no suspension and over compression damped.

I like my suspension soft and active, but sometimes I do get kicked out of the seat about on the rebound stroke. But who's right ?

My Shock has never been serviced in 3 years, reckon its due ?

Any opinions ?

Is it correctly set up for your weight using the chart on the shock?

But yes, after 3 years id say its due a service, something like £140 though off the top of my head.

We did the old Elbow on seat bounce test.

Mine seemed totally un damped, but very active.

I want the suspension to move when it needs to, lock out when I want it to.
Thats why I bought it. not rely on valving to do the job.

Bike pedals fine. hardly any movement.

i have a ransom with the same design-ish of shock and i have mine set up just like yours. Its soft with around 1-1.5 turns of rebound on.

we have the advantage of being able to lock out and adjust the suspension on the move, they can't. when you have ours in the TC mode (middle) it hardens up anyway.

The only test should be when you push down and lift the back end straight back off the floor it shouldn't make a 'dunk' noise. if it doesn't its fine?

the scott manual says you should ride off a kurb sat down and you should only bounce 2-3 times? never tried that personally but might be worth a shot?

I have an 09 Genius 40. I've had it about a month and ridden it on all kinds of trails, even did an uplift day at Innerleithen. I've found that if you follow the chart on the shock but take 10kgs of your weight and set the pressure at that feels much more responsive, absolutely hugs the trails. On the 1 - 10 rebound setting I set it at 3, for increased damping, seems to work a treat. The main thing is to match the fork and for rebound so you're not yo-yoing on the decents.
I'm loving the TC mode and find that on smoother red routes (spooky wood) full travel (150mm) is not required as you get more of a lift from TC mode......Sweet ride.

Definitely worth getting the shock serviced if it's that old (and never been done!) - send it back to the Evans store in Kendall (where they service all the shocks). They are the people who Scott send shocks to as part routine servicing (although Scott don't tell you that!!!).
