Hi all - it looks like I've been roped in to a charity ride, unfortunately the folks who are doing it are not regular cyclists, and other then having the idea of riding from one side of Scotland to the other have little idea of what’s involved. Basically they are talking about riding on road from Stranraer to Dunbar – anybody have an idea about a route probably most important a route profile?
One of the guys, indeed the originator of the idea, needs to get hold of a bike. The problem been he is 6’3”” and 20 odd stone of former Rugby player – any ideas of makes, model and sizes
Thanks for the help

Its a long way to go with newbies - how long are you intending to take? Some fair hills I think but not sure.

I'll have a more detailed look later

TJ – I think that the idea is to take 3 - 4 days – but as yet its all a bit sketchy – total ascent is 2587m with the biggest climb at about 125km so day 2 I’m guessing – the guys doing it are generally fairly fit just not cyclists – but I’ve no illusions about the enormity of the task

What kind of bikes are you doing it on? Your route takes you right to the doorsteps of Kirroughtree, Drumlanrig, Glentress and Innerleithen 😉

rudedog - We're doing it on road bikes (at least at the moment) – I know we past by quite a bit of the 7 Staines routes – If the group was a bit more experienced I would be tempted to do the Southern Uplands Way – although that does look very committing

re-the SUW, has more ascents and descents than the west highland way, isnt as flat as folk think,
i dont have garim,gps etc...just good old maps 😮
i would suggest a route to Bigger then up to St Marys Loch and up to Innerliethen and over to Gorebridge to Haddington and down the old A1 to Dunbar, im just up the road from Dunbar so feel free to pop in for a brew 😮

Coastkid – ta for that – if we actually get off the ground we may well do – the SUW does look very committing & seems to have a lot of summits to it – I’ve tried to keep the road route the valley bottoms & minor roads – I’ll take a look at your suggestions – all help welcome as It an area I have now real knowledge of.
