[#222136]

Having just removed my forks to replace the headset I have found that the steerer tube is scored, less than 0.5mm deep and runs around the back 1/3rd of the tube circumference.

What do you reckon, ok to ride or asking for extensive dental work...?

What material/thickness is the tube and what fork and type of riding ?

Any idea what has caused it ?

It's an on-one carbon rigid fork, looks like 2mm aluminium. Riding is fairly tame, with the odd rocky descent/set of steps. Caused by a loose headset...

What kind of headset were you running?

Chris King headsets are known to damage steerer tubes due to the design used to circumvent the Aheadset patent.

B o l l o x.

You mean they are rumoured to, and as this demonstrates other poorly fitted headsets may damage a steerer as well, which would rather suggest that King headsets that have damaged steerers have done so because they have not been fitted correctly. I've had my King on a range of forks, most recently a 160 mm single crown job and I've had no such problems.

Excellent, an example of a poorly fitted CK headset!

Actually King headsets are well known, really well known for ****ing your steerer tube. I certainly will not be buying one again, overpriced and over hyped.

Well, I don't seem to have any problems with mine, and given my record for bodges and cack-handedness, I'd had thought i'd be a prime candidate. I've two that were rammed in with wood, threaded bar and washers....

There is a school of thought that says it's not the King heatset but the tollerance on the steerer tube. I hear Marzocchi are particularly bad with King headsets. Is it this year or next when something chnges with the patent on A-headsets and King can make the tapered ring like everyone else?
