Just had a pin put in mine. Anyone else had the same? How long before you were back on the bike?

Cheers

Yeah had a pin put in mine 4 years ago. I think I was fit for getting back on the bike as soon as they removed the plaster - just took it easy for a while.

I broke mine when I was 16 (long time ago) but didn't realise it was broken til I was 18 and there was a lot of wear between the two bits of bone. Because of the gap they couldn't pin mine but instead I had some bone from my pelvis grafted in and a good 3 months in plaster.
It still doesn't bend properly but it doesn't hurt and doesn't stop me riding or playing rugby. Think mine was quite an extreme case due to the wear.
Good luck, sure it'll heal well just give it time and listen to the doc.

Yup, broke mine at innerleithen pretending I was good at jumps, had one cast on for 6 weeks, not fixed and snowboard season I was doing fell through, had another on for a further 6 weeks or so and it was fixed..

I could pretty much ride as soon as I got the cast off but my arm wasn't up to much, even skinnier than normal! It also helped to push against the limit I could bend my wrist back (which was much less than normal) either by putting my hands into a budda praying type position or by bouncing off a wall with my hand, gently increasing the range of movement in my wrist..

As an old skater I have done my left 5 times (thats my leading side and the first thing to hit the bottom of the pool). And my right once, that was due to an ugly women cutting me up in traffic. she was very ugly, called me a tosser as she passed but was quiet when stuck in traffic 100m later... still have the wing mirror somewhere round here.

Always in a cast for 6 weeks, but this is negotiable if you are going on a surfing trip... my doctor said that as I was heading for Hossegor that 5 weeks will be fine and he made an appointment for the cast to come off hours before the ferry left... good doctor.

Broke mine in a crash a few years ago and was in plaster for 9 weeks. Cut the cast off early, but am now left with reduced mobility in it, damn physio was right!

Bust mine playing football at Bescot. Plaster for 6 weeks then had it taken off only to find they wanted it to be plastered again for another 6 weeks.

Fell of bike a few times since and landed on wrist but nothing more than a swollen wrist so I guessed it fixed ok...

Did my left one four years ago. Not pinned, but in plaster for 12 weeks. No physio afterwards either.

Bit of a mare as i don't think it was set properly so get twinges fairly often. Not looking forward to old age, but who is?

Usual weeks in plaster here, but I carried on riding a road bike all the time. Aches in cold weather and gets kind of stuck every now and then, but essentially ok.

With a fibre glass cast, I got so fed up with the stinky itchiness that I used to wash mine in the bath, then use a hair drier on it.

Broken my right one twice. first time was as a pissed student falling off a bus shelter. Second time I fell of my bike at speed and had it in a cast for 6 weeks. However it didn't heal properly because I'd damaged the blood supply so I now have a "non-union scaphoid fracture" - basically a bit of necrotic bone in my wrist. Movement is a bit limited but I've just got used to it.

It very rarely stops me from biking and has never caused pain whilst actually on the bike, but certain movements can aggravate it and it will ache for a few days (ibuprofen sorts it out). Hacking at tree roots and concreted-in washing poles is contra-indicated IME...

Consultant reckons it might become arthritic at some point in the future at which point they'll remove the dead bit and fuse some other bits together which will remove the pain at the expense of reduced mobility. She was very keen that I keep biking and climbing as strong hand muscles compensate for the lack of structural integrity.

The moral of the story is: make sure it heals properly and if it doesn't demand a bone-graft ASAP - I didn't...

I had exactly the same problem. I was off the bike for about 4 months after the op cos i had to let it heal but now i still dont have full movement but i can ride my bike without pain ๐Ÿ˜€

Good luck chap

Broke mine coming off a motor bike doing 60 mph 'very fast' (according to the cops to my brother - it was his bike...) when I was in my early 20's.

Didn't need pinning though but was in casts for 6 weeks (the changing of casts at the end of week 3 was ****in sore!).

From memory it was pretty much crap for the 6-9 months afterwards then improved gradually thereafter.

Now being the average STW age of 44 its fine: no reduced mobility and doesn't give me no gyp. Unlike the left index finger I dislocated last year...

As ever the moral is get things moving as soon as you're allowed and stick to the physio programme as a minimum. Yes it will hurt but then its supposed to dummy...

did mine in an over the bars incident a few years back. No complications, plaster for 6 weeks and then a few more before it came back to feeling strong enough to ride off road again. It's one not to rush though, get it fixed properly first time.

I can't tell the difference in normal use now - in fact would have to think hard to work out which side it was? Trying the Buddha prayer position I'd say right?

yep broke mine doing jumps and ended up with a herbert screw holding it together, I had a cast on for 10 weeks but began turbo training within a few weeks, the sweat made the cast bit smelly but it ws changed 3 times over the ten weeks and at the time I was a smelly student so didnt care.

Having broken mine last summer and had it pinned, I agree with stuartie_c.

DON'T rush the recovery, keep the plaster on for as long as the surgeon/physio recommends, do the exercises etc. Being able to get back on the bike faster than recommended is not a good swap for all the potential problems if you do so....

I missed 6 months of biking, but it seems worth it as the wrist's now fine, with no pain, and has a good range of movement.
