My completed Five

This is the one my mate got this week.

MoseyMTB made the right choice I reckon. Orange ones are common as muck ๐Ÿ˜€

Yeah come on. Many on here would have built it, ridden it, pointlessly upgraded and flogged it in the time you're taking to build it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The delay is down to required bits. I ordered the wrong brake mount etc.

And finally getting started -

I brought the stand inside as it's just too cold outside.

Big biz of shiny new 1x11 bits that my amazing wife bought me ๐Ÿ™‚

Ignore the messy kitchen please ๐Ÿ™‚

But +10 for the wife buying you bits.

That's cool, and I don't like Orange 5's. 8)

So, first problem after lots of wins. Gear cable went through the swing arm perfectly. I've bled the reverb and it works and fitted the Ispec b XT shifter.

Brake cable went through surprisingly easily until I realised the rubber cover doesn't fit through the hole ๐Ÿ™

How do I get round this?

On my old 5 the hose just came out the hole, no cover/bung

That looks like the cover on the brake lever? If so you need to disconnect the hose.

Also my old five did't have a grommet on that hole in the swinging arm.

That's the rubber sheath that covers the pinch bolt where it enters the lever.

I'll have to chop it off and put a new and olive on ๐Ÿ™ no way it will fit through.

I was just using the same hose so it wouldn't fit over the olive.

Not having a geommet there would annoy me, esp. with price of the frame

Oh well, New olive, insert, sheath and bleed it is.

I'd just take the brake hose back out the swing arm, take the rubber grommet off that goes on the lever.
Thread the rod that comes with the frame back through the swingarm and tape the brake hose to it. Then pull it back through.. And then bleed the rear brake.

Had to stop now as my power links have all gone walkabout.

Here is the build so far. Really happy with the XT M8000 gear.

I'll update with better pictures in the daytime tomorrow.

I'm with Golddigger, hoses look braided so little chance of the frame rubbing them through. If frame damage is a concern some insulating tape round the hose until a grommet can be fitted.

Goldigger, you can't do that mate. The rubber sheath doesn't fit over the olive and nut. The rubber sheath has to go in first. Or in this case, the hose has to go through the swing arm without the olive and nut in place.

They aren't braided by the way, just standard shimano.

I've no issues with rubbing, it's just the way it has to work in this case. The olive has to come off to remove the nut and the nut has to come off to remove the sheath.

Just a few more out of the stand ๐Ÿ™‚

I love it so far. Stand over is a bit tight but absolutely fine.

Cheers mate. Just need a powerlink, a new brake lever rubber sheath and to tune it all up and it should be good to go.

Nice! I have the previous model five which I also built up. Great fun although I do seem to have one slight 'problem' with it. Pootling along it feels somewhat lethargic, start behaving/riding like a hooligan and it suddenly comes alive. It's almost like there is a sweet spot to hit to get the most out if it. Just wish I could get that lively feeling when I don't want to ride it like I stole it. Need to play with the shock settings a little, that might help.

Not sure I'm really making much sense but hopefully you'll get my drifft!

When I was 16, I got my '93 Explosif resprayed in pretty much that colour and got mocked for it being "well-gay".

I was just ahead of my time clearly ๐Ÿ™‚ Naturally, I think your build looks [s]well-gay[/s] tidy.

(P.S. I think your bread is trying to escape)

Funny you should say that, about 5 minutes before that picture, the bread made an escape! That was post pick up!

Oh and I'll take well gay as a positive ๐Ÿ™‚

Ah I'm with you...
I thought this through and ordered a couple of spare olives and barbs so I could cut the olive off and then remove the bolt and rubber.. As I would be shortening the hose anyway.

So I hope you don't have execess hose all over the handle bars... ๐Ÿ˜€

I had an 08 one in Original Orange and have often hankered after another, despite having a 2015 Anthem SX which suits my riding a lot better. That mint colour though is lovely, nicest one I've seen !!

I've loads of barbs. It's olives I don't have ๐Ÿ™

Now I have to try and find the rubber sheath for sale somewhere.

It could do with an inch off the hose I think.
