Will have a day in Salisbury and free to go MTB or CX. Have been there a few times, firstly way back in 2003 for the Winter Polaris -- that was all a bit of a blur and I remember going back home to the Peak thing the word "Plain" was a bit of a misnomer!!
Visited a couple of times since and had a very pleasant ride around the Imber Ranges from Citterne to Larkhill and back by Stonehenge and Yarnbury Castle (copied out of Ian White's Wiltshire MTB guide)
Last October tried to do the same but it was an unrideable mudfeast thanks to the tanks having been on manoeuvres.
Given current ground conditions what would the locals recommend for a 20 - 25 mile ride in the area?
Yes, good route choice from an excellent book. Are you more interested in racking up miles?
Wouldn't be adverse to racking up miles and would most likely consider the cross bike if it's mainly tracks and quiet roads, although wouldn't mind sniffing out any tech/interesting bits.
Currently looking at something from Wilton going along Gravely wood and back along the old Western road. Do you know what's that like at the mo?
Not much rain in Wilton recently. Grovely roman road always drains well, some of the side tracks not so. Monarchs way for example. For a simple ride you could do Wilton towards Burcombe, up to drove road, maybe muck about in hare warren for a bit, down Compton or Fovant Down, cross a30 and climb into Grovely, then skirt the northern edge and descend back down into Wilton.
