I'd like to ditch the rucksack for the commute. Not keen on panniers so thinking maybe a saddlebag. Who uses one and what can you fit in? Lunch? Clothes? Tools? Lock?
For many years I used my Carradice Nelson Long Flap for my daily commute (back in the day when my bike was my only transport, and I had a 10mile route each way to work) brilliant classic design. tough as a tough tough thing. and very water tight (assuming you use full length mudguards.
the long flap version means it will extend out to an oversize bag when you need it to. the two side pockets are priceless for smaller things. I always used to put my gear inside plastic shopping bag before putting into the saddlebag, and don't remember ever getting wet kit.
I remember touring down to and around north France with that bag and a bar bag instead of panniers (B&B style) and using the long flap option to get my bottle of wine, lump of cheese and large baguette stowed safely.
I still use it but only as my pub/shopping bike bag. personally I prefer the use of my timbuk2 messanger bag for every day commuting (mainly due to the poor road surfaces and long twisting fast descents meaning the bike takes a hammering) and if the weight is straight on the bike then it results in the odd broken spoke, and I'm less likely to manage a late bunny hop compared to having the weight on my body and being able to soften the impact and spread the load. - bit I do still love my nelson ๐
Carradice are where you need to be looking. I use this one http://www.carradice.co.uk/sqr-saddlepacks/sqr-tour.shtml and it's great. I get my paclite, change of undies, lunchbox, dirty work clothes, tools, pump in it no probs it's waterproof has reflective bits and a handy place to clip my rear light onto. They are pricey though.
Those almost look too big for my needs. Usually carry pump. Puncture kit. Park Allen tool and letherman with a sandwich. Shirt. Undies and socks. Monday and Friday may involve taking extra clothes for washing though

maybe the cadet or barley are more suitable.
