Just getting my other MTB ready for tomorrow and noticed some serious rust on the discs. It must have picked up some road salt when being driven back from it's last outing before Christmas.

Should I:

send them for scrap ?
sand it off and use them ?
just ride it and it will wear off ?

Had a quick go on the road and they were very squeally.

If they were hanging off the back of the car, I'd give them a wipe with some IPA. The road salt wouldn't worry me but the oil/diesel washed up off the road in the wet might.

Other than that, they should be fine and will clean up through use.

No. Your pads might wear quicker but no.

This is why I always keep my discs well oiled

Stick some old pads on and do some hard stops

Would be my choice but I’d be doing a few tests before a life or death scenario

Back in the day, my mate had rusty rims on a cantilever braked bike.

A garage actually told her to put wd40 on the rims and she actually did it. With predictable results!

@binman

I'd give yours a clean with disk brake cleaner then go  ride round the block to see if the brakes stopped ok.

Loud brakes are loud, not nessiarily bad.

No, don't do this. You use WD40 to stop them squeaking

They'll clean up in about 100yrs of braking

Rust likely to give a good bite for the pads, it won't sound nice and it'll only last until the rust is removed - so 4 or 5 hard brakes.
