About to do a 1x9 build, and as I normally ride ss I thought the range on a road cassette would be sufficient but (probably) lighter. Anyone done it?

Used to run a 12-27 dura ace cassette during my weight weenie phase, worked great.

Yes, I run Ultegra 9 speed cassette on a 1x9 set up, no problems in over a year 🙂

Brill. I was thinking of a medium cage Shimano rear mech - but what 'super short' road mechs will work then?

I used to use a 105 road mech, any will work with a road cassette.

I Use a 12-25 Tiagra on my 1x9 DH(ish) HT…

Did once try the same cassette with a 26/36 double setup didn’t find it too bad, but did feel the need for some taller gears by the end of the day, great for hacking down hills, smooth shifts, not sure the weight saving offsets the loss of gear range though, there are some pretty light MTB cassettes about you can still get an 11-28 which is a sensible range and probably not much heavier than most road cassettes….

I run a 11-21 road cassette and a 105 SS mech on my DH bike with no problem.

I put an 11-34 mtb cassette on last week and that worked fine too.
