Evening all,
Quick question: Anyone have an idea why my front disc pads start (quite gently, but audible) rubbing on the rotor when I 'turn' the bars to the left (or get out the saddle, over the bars - ie applying downward pressure on the bars).
Hose seems okay - certainly not too tight...
On XT (M775) levers and calipers, and shimano 180mm rotors. Was wondering if it could be the hub?
Cheers for any suggestions...
Rich
There's pretty close clearance between pads & rotors, and a bit of force on the front unit can twist everything slightly, making it rub. It's not unusual, and I get it cornering hard on tarmac - and probably off road as well, but with all the other things going on don't notice it! Of course it'll be more likely if the rotor isn't precisely centered in the pads, has a bit of a warp in it, hub bearings worn/maladjusted or QR not done up tight enough - so I'd check these things first. The torsional (twisting) forces on a front fork can be large, which is one of the reasons for the appearance of large diameter axles like QR15 in place of the conventional 9mm ones, to stiffen up the whole front end.
Most likely to be a skewer that's not fully tightened, or hub bearings with a touch of play.As mentioned above, clearances are fairly tight, so it doesn't take much movement for rub to occur. Also worth checking your caliper/rotor alignment too, there should be an identical gap either side of the rotor to the pads, both pads should hit the rotor square and flat at the same time, and the rotor shouldn't run from side to side when you spin the wheel.
Cheers Chaps - hadn't thought about the QRs not being tight enough - I've actually got hex key skewers on (as I use the bike for commuting too) - so wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.
Thanks again, will report back....

Ah, that could be your problem there!
I tried the hex key skewers on my bike, but I just couldn't get them wound up tight enough to make me feel safe. Road bike/commuter maybe, but with the forces off-roading and disc brakes put on a skewer, I just didn't trust 'em, and went back to the QRs.
It could be that the lower torque on the hex skewers is allowing more than normal play in your whole front end. I'd try it with the old QR lever in, and see if it makes any difference. But also check bearing play, rotor alignment etc as above...
Ace - cheers; I've still got the QRs at home in the parts box, so can give them a whirl if it's still not playing ball.
You certainly have to be a bit careful with the hex skewers, I 'over' tightened one set a while back and the other bolt went flying across the garden. To be honest, I didn't think I'd tightened it up that much.
Thanks for the suggestions,
All the best,
Rich
Thanks all - seems to have done the job (a mixture of tightening up the bolts after re-setting the wheel).
Must have had it on the wonk.
Cheers,
Rich
