Whilst over the last few years I have made the move to external BB's I made the decision to go back to square taper on my Soul build.

Currently running a Shimano BB but wondered what the Royce stuff was like. Is it just as/more hard wearing?

My last Shimano BB went nearly ten years before being replaced and even then it wasn't knackered ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Thoughts?

I have a Royce Ti BB on one of my SS's, beautifully made, just follow the fitting instructions (degrease cranks and taper, tighten cranks to correct torque, short ride, tighten cranks to correct torque, short ride, tighten cranks to correct torque, short ride, tighten cranks to correct torque, short ride, until cranks stop moving) and then forget about it.

Just fitting a new Royce Ti...how short is "short", Dibbs? Literally just a hundred yards up the road, or a proper, but short, ride?

I was considering buying one, but Im a "proper" mountain biker so I never do short rides. Therefore i dont think I'd be able to install it correctly.

Literally just a hundred yards up the road

Is what Cliff from Royce told me, but I found they needed torquing once more after the first decent offroad ride.

I've found the fitting instructions:-

7. Crank end bolts should be re-tightened to 20lbfft (27 Nm) torque after each of a series of short (100 metres) rides that increase in intensity. This process should continue until the end bolts stop rotating and the cranks have fully bedded-in. When fully bedded in, the inside edge of the crank arm should not reach the start of the radius at the top of the axle taper.

Ahh, Royce BB's. only think I'd use if I ran square taper again. Last one I had was in for over 4 years (though it had to be removed with brute force). The original bearings are great, lasted ages and warranty is good.

I did snap an axle once, not sure what happened really. Owned a 124mm axle for ages, no problems, changed to 113 for low profile cranks and after a year or so it snapped. The new one was fine for years after though.
