I fancy some leg exercise and thinking of cycling from Glasgow out to Ben Lomond, bagging it, then cycling home.
So I see the choice as being between road bike and using the cycle route up to Balloch then carrying on round up to Rowardennan. Or using the mountain bike and going up the West Highland Way from Milngavie to get there.
Any thoughts on which of the two you'd say is preferable?
Thanks in advance.
You'll need a bloody big bag to fit Ben Lomond. MTB and up the WHW would be preferable.
If you can manage that then hats off to you. Having done Ben Lomond last night/ this morning, there's no cycling on the way up to the summit, and plenty to throw you off on the way down!
Oh good crivvens no, will just lock the bike at the bottom and walk up! The last time I did it there were a few folks carrying bikes up but that's not an idea I'm tempted to consider quite yet.
Thanks for the replies guys.
The sustrans route is an easy ride, and it has its highlights, but its also pretty dismal in places.
To have enough energy left it would really have to be the road bike unless your uber fit.
Planning a night ascent, see in the dawn and ride back down in the early morning. That will be two Saturdays from now if anyone is interested. About six of us going so far.
BoardingBob, did you not manage some of the flatter sections on the way up ? Usually about a third is ridable on the way up ( at best).
Can ride maybe 90-95% on the way down. Its a superb descent mostly, just some annoyingly narrow bits in places.
