[Closed] Rounded bolt on rear mech, stuck on mech hanger, what are my options?

As above, tried to take off my sramX0 rear mech to swap over to a new frame. Bolt rounded, mech hanger on old frame bent, so took off mech hanger with mech attached. So how do I get the mech off the mech hanger. I have seen a replacement bolt kit on eBay, but not sure how I get the old one off?

Please help!

This is one of the very few things that bolt extractors are good at- nice big hole, soft metal for it to bite in. But first, chuck it in a tub of penetrating oil, or paraffin or diesel, to get it loosened up.

don't SRAM mechs hold the bolt to the casting with a small allen key? On my X-9 you can undo this and take the bolt off the mech and would then be able to turn the bolt off the hangar with pliers

ah, just realised this only works when you have the mech off the hangar- oops

What's a Bolt extractor and where do I get one?, or better to hand mech and hanger over to my LBS to let them have a go?

Soak it in WD40 and use a vice to press a torx drive into it and wind it out, as said above its a big hole in soft metal so comes out quite easy,

cut the hanger across the bolt hole with a hack saw then remove and replace?

... extracting bolts?

LOL. Nah, usually they're for snapping off in stuck bolts, meaning you need to drill out both the bolt and the hardened steel extractor.

if the bolt is toast, just saw through the hanger.

I've done the same on my Tension Seeker 2, rounded off the 4mm bolt.

Tomorrow, out with the toolbox and we'll see what happens.

Any excuse to drill something or other.

get an allen key a size bigger than the original hole, hammer into now rounded hole, unscrew.

If you've limited tools driving a slightly over size allen key may work and in emergencies a torx bit driven in has worked for me. a bolt extractor (stud extractor) works like a reverse self tapping bolt winding itself in anticlockwise until it bites and starts undoing the knackered bolt. Your rounded allen bolt has a hole so just wind it in and away you go. A set of cheap ones should cost less than £5 from your local tool emporium. If the hole is to shallow for it you can easily drill out guided by the existing hole.
Happy to lend mine/give you a hand, if you're local to the FOD mail me.

Good morning fettlers!

Thank's danofthedean!

This will be a good day, love the hardware emporiums at this time of the morning: Lucozade and fry-up rolls.

Bolt extractors are available from screw fix, I paid about £15 next day delivery for a set of 2. Easy to use, handy thing to have in your tool box.

Looks like Monday next week £3.99 probably not the greatest but for occasional use should be fine http://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/lidl_uk/hs.xsl/index_32562.htm

Edit: Come to think of it I bought mine from them a couple years ago and it's been spot on.

Screw fix update! £3.29 for a set of 5! I don't work for screw fix by the way. Mine are a bit different as they have the milling bit on each end these don't, but you shouldn't need that bit.

Just batter a torx bit in the hole and you'll be dandy.
