Hello Riders,
Could you help me with some information regarding a roof rack for a car. I'm wanting to get a couple of these Thule 591 Proride Cycle Carriers. I don't have the bars yet but do I need thule bars? Or could I just get some cheaper bars? Also I'm fitting these to a VW 2000 3 door polo.
Also where is the cheapest place to look for both bars and the carriers?
Thanks to all.
The 591 will fit normal square bars no problem.
www.roofbox.co.uk has competative prices and some helpful info. I've always had good service from them.
I bought my Thule roof rack off ebay. Had to buy a different footpack to fit my car but worked out a lot cheaper and happy with it.
I bought the Halfords advanced bike racks, which are the same as the 591 predecessors. Got 2 of them for £65 when they were on a deal. Not sure if the 591's are better or not never used them.
Halfords is a good place to look, when they have deals on them, they're usually a very good price.
£58 inc VAT seems like a good price, not sure what the delivery charge is tho...
www.skidrive.co.uk are great.
You don't need Thule bars, but they do look good 😉
same as Dafunk. Halfords two for one offer and they've improved the old Thule version by adding another lock to secure carrier to bars.
any old bars will do too.
I've got some Paddy Hopkirk bars for a Seat Leon going for a crate of beer if you want them (in Ripponden). That's if they fit.
Has anyone used both the 591's and older ones (530 I think) to give a comparison?
Thanks
As ever thank you all very much. Think I will go for some halfords bars teamed with thule carriers.
Cheers!
I have the Halfords 2 for 1 specials. They have been fine over a couple of years but I was driving across the Dales a couple of weeks back in very high winds and the front wheel attachment twisted round leaving the wheel at a 70 degree angle to the side, the bike twisted in the downtube clamp and was leaning away over to one side. It was still very firmly attached to the car and it was extremely windy when it happened, but I think the beefier attachments on the new Thules would have kept the wheel straight and stopped the problem occurring.
Question for all the people with Halfords specials/ Thule 530's.
Do you ever have a situation when the upright bracken wobbles down towards the bottom? It seems as though slight sideways movements in the bike are letting the bracket slip down towards the crank.
It seems like I'm either not tightening up tight enough or sometimes over tightening it (if you can do that) to a point where I struggle to get it off.
How tight is tight enough?
Thanks
