I'm thinking about buying one of these to replace my broken Fox Triad. Has anyone got one? What do you think of it? I can't find much feedback on them, but quite a lot about air leaking out of the 4.2s.

You don't want one of them, they're rubbish 😉

Does nobody really not know anything about these? My bike buddy says this place is the fount of all knowledge!
How about recommendations for a shock for Spesh fsr xc then? £150 budget. Please and thank you.

I'd suggest a second hand Fox RP23 which you should be ok with for your budget. Unlike their forks, RS shocks aren't anywhere near as good (IMO).

Doesn't the FSR XC (depending on year) have an odd shock length which makes finding an aftermarket replacement very difficult?

I've learnt that Fox have this reputation for getting "stuck down" which is part of what happened to mine, though not until I'd used it for 3 years. That's why I was thinking giving an RS a try.

My FSR is an '06 and takes a 165 x 38 shock... is that an odd length? The monarch quotes 165 x 28, but I presumed a typo.

As usual mindless rubbish on STW.

Take a look at Bike Radar, MTBR reviews.com, cyclingnews.com - all of them agree the Monarch is level if not better than the Fox RP23.

165x38 is a standard size the Monarch is available in that. 165x28 is a typo.

Alot of people are quick to critisize - but i doubt most people have actually ridden one. I think there an excellent match to the new Blackbox damped RS forks as they have the same high and low speed compression circuits.

I've ridden one :p so there!

In fact, I've recently fitted a RS shock to one of my bikes because it was what I could get that had a remote lockout but I still don't think it's as good as a Fox one.

double "so there" 🙂

The only RS shock available with a remote is the MC3.R - which is a whole different league compaired to the monarch. It's a simple shock - the monarch is much MUCH more advanced.

SO THERE 😉

But I didn't say that my shock (the one with the remote) is the monarch that I've ridden and it's not - SO THERE 🙂

You lot are funny.
Thanks for the input, though I've realised I'm none the wiser.

got a 4.2 hasn't had a lot of use but seems to work. Better than the Manitou it replaced.

mrmo - what's it on? Been looking at one to replace an old Swinger 3 way (actually that sounds rude in retrospect)

It is on a Trek Top Fuel, 165x38 Monarch 4.2 replaced a Manitou Radium RL.

Got a monarch 3.1 on my new Boardman, and have been very impressed with it actually. No lock out, but the pro pedal works very well, and the travel is smooth so far. Only had it a month or so, so can't comment on longevity yet.
