I'd like to swap the Motion Control DNA remote damper from a Rockshox SID for a crown adjust version. After a quick look around it seems like a case of removing one damper and fitting another but is it? Has anyone here done it?

If it is then will a Reba damper fit for instance?

Ta.

In 'some cases' it is that easy....However, in most it means buying a compatible damper with your fork. In the past, I've taken the serial number for the fork and given SRAM Tech a call; They'll be able to clarify whether the spare damper unit you have will work.

Or, you could just take a punt and fit it (as long as you know how to measure and adjust the oil in the damper to fit it then it might be a good day for you ๐Ÿ˜€ )

Yes, the Reba one fits, and yes, it is that simple.

Cheers both, took a punt and whipped the existing damper out yesterday so will have a look around to see what's available. If all else fails I'll send the lot off to Jtech for sorting.

I've got an unused Sid RCT3 crown adjust damper for sale if you are interested. It should probably fit. Which year is your fork?

It's this one, so if you've got a 2012 onwards ('B' chassis), it's not the right one:

You know you can easily modify the remote damper to a crown adjust by just removing the return spring in the damper.

Take the damper out, spot the return spring thats pulling the adjuster back to its default position and use a screwdriver to flick one end of the spring out of its hole. Its fine to leave the spring inside unconnected. The pop the damper back in.

You can add some sort of friction ring like a thin 0ring or some to the knob but I found it didn't need anything it stayed in position fine.

Glennh, not sure what year it is, the remote lever has October 11 marked so I guess it could be '11 or '12.

Jairaj, thanks but I don't follow. I have the damper out and see a fairly large spring on the shaft which seems to cause the shaft to return home. There's no sign of any locating holes for the spring as it sits on a top and bottom plate.

I'd also need to work out how to detach the banjo from the remote hose and do something with what's left on the top of the damper cap.

I'm going to take a punt on a new damper, cheaper the better as these were a cheap eBay buy for the bike I'm building for my lad. When he starts using the bike he'll barely be heavy enough to get the forks working fully so a remote damper button is going to be pointless.

You'll need to work out if they are '11 or '12 - my understanding is that they changed the internal diameter of the stanchions in 2012, so there are versions of the dampers for both diameters ( 'A' and 'B' chassis types).

I brought a crown adjust lever for a few quid from tf tuned to replace the remote lock out on mine then as Jairaj mentioned you just need to disconnect the return spring.

Check out Peter Poddy's guide as that's how I found out how to do it

OP's original cartridge seems to be XX, so it cannot be adjusted externally by rotating something.

Yep, talks of banjos and hoses makes it XX, so new damper definitely needed!

Yes guys, I failed to mention that they are XX and so have the hydraulic activated control.

Looking into things a bit more the SRAM website suggests a part number for a crown activated damper which i have found at one or two German shops so I'll keep looking in that direction.
