[#12032961]

So, I’ve got a gen 1 Cotic RocketMAX with a set of Pike 29 RC forks (non-boost) on them currently set at 160mm. I’ve mostly used the bike with Hunt 27.5 wheels but have a set of Hope Enduro 29 wheels too.

I think I’d like a new fork on the bike and am leaning towards a Lyrik Ultimate in 150mm. But to switch to a boost fork will mean both current wheel sets becoming somewhat redundant.

I’d rather not have to buy another set of wheels so considering running the bike in mullet mode and just buying a 29er front wheel (from Hunt) and then flogging the Hope wheels and fork to get a few pounds back.

Does this sound like a good idea? Will a gen 1 in mullet mode be horrible to ride? Will the Lyrik be any better than the Pike (already with Debonair upgrade)? Or am I better considering a smashpot coil conversion for the Pike and saving my money (they could do with a service anyway if I’m keeping them)? The considered views of STW welcome.

There are probably options to make your existing wheels usable in a boost fork.

Oh, and I rate the Lyrik Ultimate over the Pike too, so I say do it!

But I'd stick as much travel in the front as possible.. why do you wish to go shorter?

Thanks @the00. Not thought about converting the current wheels to boost.

Thinking of dropping 10mm as imagined running it in mullet would make it too vague (the forks were 140mm originally) so slightly less travel but a 29 front wheel come out about the same in terms of geometry.

The hope wheel will definitely boost. Hope make a kit (longer non brake side end cap with redish) and there are several other good conversions (i.e. not just loose spacers). For the hunts you could run a loose type conversion of rehub the wheel.

Thanks @nixie, I think I’ll definitely convert the Hope front wheel if it’s a relatively straight forward job, looks like a new hub spacer and re-dish (which I’ll get the LBS to do).

Still interested to hear if anyone has run a RocketMAX in mullet mode or if it’s not worth it. I might still get a 29 Hunt Enduro front wheel to have a set of 29er wheels and the a mullet set as well.

Didn't you say you already have both 27.5 and 29" wheels already, it shouldn't be too hard to just give it a go even if you are committing the fashion faux pas of mismatched wheels?

There's a blogpost on the Cotic website talking about mullets, erm:
