Do Shimano MTB rear mechs (XT shadow for eg) work with Shimano road STI shifters (Tiagra for eg)?

I have a mtb rear mech (9sp) on stis (9sp) working just fine
for extra niche, it's a rapid-rise 🙄

Up to 9 speed, yes, 10 speed I think not (front mechs generally not)
Note you can use any 6-9 speed shifter with any 6-9 speed mech - it will work (though a 6 speed chain may foul a 9s derailleur cage etc)

It'll an 8 speed Sora shifter, but have a mtb rear mech in shed.
