If I was gonna buy some MTB wheels I'd automatically look for something with Hope hubs cos they have sealed bearings, are pretty light and fairly well made and are easy to service.

Whats an equivalent hub for a set of road wheels? Or do hope make road hubs?

Also, whats a decent set of rims?

Yip hope make ProIII non-disc - for a std like XC717 and ProII then I guess ProIII on mavic open pros for around £250 would be similar?

Hope have started doing road wheels. IIRC the hubs are very similar if not the same as the MTB hubs, and the rims are rebadged FSA rims.

Good points but road wheels have so much easier a life than mtb ones that it's much less of an issue. I'd never use cup and cone (Shimano) wheels offroad for the reasons you're suggesting but they're fine on road.

Campag wheels for me FWIW.

Are they as noisy though? Don't mind Hopes on my MTBs but on a road bike they'd drive me a bit mad I think!

You can make Hope hubs near silent by loading them up with plenty of grease if it really bothers you. Thing is with road bikes though, you're usually pedalling so noisy freehubs is less of an issue (and Campag ones are pretty noisy).

Campag gear is the best, because it's the prettiest. The end.

Had a set of Hope Hoops road wheels recently and they were pretty good - well made and reasonably light. Only probs I experienced were the noise!!! and the fact that after a few hundred miles the freehub body was so badly marked / scored it may as well have been made out of chocolate - well worth changing to a steel freehub body IMO.
