Ok, shoot me now, but I am about to try and rebuild a worn out sti unit, everything looks ok, it appeared that the flight deck cable had got snagged and caused problems, so I had to take it apart to get it out.
Anyone ever, ever done this successfully, not much help is to be had from the road world.
I've rebuilt some Campag ones, pretty straight forward if you pay attention to where everything goes. Never done a Shimano one, they're supposedly not user serviceable, but Shimano always say that. Be aware that none of the parts are available except the name plate, hood and clamp (AFAIK), so if you break it, you bin it.
I've rebuilt one, so it is possible. Not sure how much help I can be though, as it was a long time ago - my only tip is to look for a manual for a first generation Ultegra STI (6400), since they gave a bit more detail on taking things apart. Must be able to find that online somewhere.
I've done some old Ultegra's. I had to make a tool to get them apart but it was ultimately sucessful. One stage at a time!
Oh yes, 6400 STIs also came with a special tool for resetting one of the springs - basically just a small tube which fitted over the end to twist it round into position. You'll want to make one of those (if I come across my one I'll drop you a line).
