In summer I am planning to do a month long cycle tour around Europe however it will be on a tight budget so I'm planning to adapt my road bike to make it more comfortable.
My question is how much will getting a stem with considerable rise affect the handling and also what are people experiences with adjustable stems?

I have an adjustable stem (looks pretty similar to this) on my touring bike. I bought it to experiment with different bar positions, and ended up leaving it on.

It’s surprisingly solid and normal–feeling once tightened. I wouldn’t trust it on a mountain bike (I doubt it’s rated for sending it off sick gnars) but for touring it does the job. Once adjusted and tightened you forget it’s an adjustable one.
