After a lack of talent moment on some gravel I have bashed up the shifters on my old road bike. I'm considering changing just the shifters to get it up and running again but does anyone know if new Sora 9spd shifters will be compatible with my old 105 derailleur?

Watch out for different pull ratios on the brakes. IIRC you need to look at the model numbers and all x800 levers will work with x800 calipers.

You can use any shimano road rear mech (or mtb mech up to 9 speed) with any road shifter.
So yes.
