Some help please,

My 9 speed rear mech on my road bike is on its way out. Can i replace it with a 10 speed mech and use it with 9 speed shifters and cassette? i am thinking i can upgrade the rest to 10 speed at a later date.

Shimano don't put their actuation ratios on their product listings as far as i have looked.

I have seen other posts and sites with the same question but cant get a definate answer.

Anyone had success or failure with this?

I think Shimano mechs are all cross compatible bar mtb 10s

I'm using a 10sp 105 5700 mech with 9sp 105 5500 shifters (and 9sp SRAM chain and cassette). Works.

Mine works a treat.
More to do with the shifters moving the mech the correct distance, innit. So shifters and cassette need to match.

Road mech yes, but not an MTB mech, which are incompatible with everything else.

I can also confirm that a 105 10sp mech works fine on a 9sp set up

I now have 9sp STIs, chain and cassette and 10sp chainset and rear mech - all working fine and dandy

Yep, not a problem, I've done it on an old cx bike & a road bike earlier in the year & it worked fine.
