Does anyone have any recommendations for some road cycling routes, starting from Keswick? Ideally:

- about 70-80 miles
- quiet roads
- happy with lots of climbing, but would prefer long steady climbs than 25% short steep ones!
- mid-ride cafe recommendations would be much appreciated

Ennerdale via Honister and back via whinlatter. Couple of big hills in that ride ๐Ÿ˜† and straight through the beautiful Borrowdale Valley.

Find the 6 passes sportive route, whinlatter, back to borrowdale via Newlands, honister then back via whinlatter with optional Newlands honister loop

Thanks folks!

Will get the map out and start looking, but if anyone has any links to route maps and / or strava route maps that would be very much appreciated

If you prefer long and steady to brutally steep you want Whinlatter rather than Newlands or Honister, although Newlands from Braithwaite is long and steady until the last 200m.

As suggested above

Route 71 / 7 / 68 out to Hartside and back - you can do the loop either way i suppose

Thanks!

Also, has anyone done a circular road route round Skiddaw?

A few routes from Keswick, including one that goes round the back of Skiddaw:

* not so much in the way of 'long steady climbs'

The obvious back roads round skiddaw route- bassenthwaite, uldale, Caldbeck, hesket, mungrisedale is about 35 miles, a beautiful ride with no ridiculous steepness. You could extend by heading out from towards Ireby from bassenthwaite to the coast at Silloth then loop back to continue the back of skiddaw route. Alternatively, the Lakeland loop is about right in distance but will put you on a couple of steep passes. A classic ride though, extend a little bit and do the whole Fred whitton route!

Thanks all! Great suggestions and route info.

Just realised its the Fred Whitton this weekend (which is when I'm going up to Keswick) - is it best to avoid riding sections of the route on Sunday? I always feel slightly like a free-loader if I get mixed up with a sportive when on an ordinary ride, but it will be difficult to avoid all parts of the Fred route as it takes in most of the Lakes!!!

Fred will be coming through Keswick 730-930 ish then Honister-Newlands-whinlatter. Later start for you and don't ride against the flow and you'll be fine.
