Yeah there must be when you're at the top of your game like they are.. for the average (or below average in my case) rider I didn't see much of a point.

On the other hand I need to make the most of what little power I have in my legs and I'm convinced SPD's/SPD-SL's do that.

m520s are less than 20 quid with cleats if you shop around and about 14 quid without

I'd say there's probably more of a point, the gains will be so much more % wise. There's a huge difference between flats, SPDs and SPD-SL's (roadie specific ones). No matter how stiff you think your MTB shoes are, road shoes are much stiffer and actually much more comfortable when you're in the same position for hours on end. The bigger cleat avoids hot spots in your foot and gives a much more solid pedalling platform.
Also means you're much more efficient and if you're an "average rider" you'll be wanting to save as much energy as possible cos it'll make a big difference.

520's will do the job, they will not give all the advantages that road specific pedals offer but they do mean you can walk if you need to. Because of the way you ride a road bike the speed of entry you get by having a double sided pedal doesn't matter so road pedals are single sided.

I don't know how strong you are or how steep the hills your likely to face but i am assuming that by virtue of the questions your asking you haven't been riding along time and aren't the strongest of riders. being able to walk on some hills may be an advantage at least in the short term.
