Evening, I've got an early 90s Peugeot road bike that I currently have set up single speed for a bit of local riding when I haven't got time to go mountain biking
It's got 23c tyres which although nice and quick on the roads(which I try and avoid!), are a bit of a 'mare on some of the local cycle ways and occasional off road, through the woods bits I go on
The frame was built for mud guards so there's a fair bit clearance, loads on the fork but at the tightest point on the chain stays it's about 7mm wide. The 23c tyres are 23mm wide so is it safe to say I could pop a 28 or even 30c in there? No idea on rim width though
Don't forget to check all clearances - chainstays, seat stays, caliper, seat tube.
Don't know but a wider tyre might have a generally larger carcass, not just wider?
Personally, I've found 28mm tyres pretty sluggish.
Your rim width will determine overall profile width, if you've got a vernier gauge measure your current tyre width and see if it is a true 23mm size across the sidewalls, if so then you'll most likely get away with a 28c tyre, if you have 5mm+ clearance using a 23mm tyre on all parts at the moment you'll be fine
Thanks
7mm was the tightest, there was plenty space around all other points . I'll give it a go 🙂
That link... sweaty Lycra clad men sweating and in pain! Not for me, I'm not bothered about speed particularly, I'm bumbling about on a twenty year old chro-mo frame! Just after a bit more comfort on the off road bits 🙂
