I've recently bought a gravel bike with Rival 1 gearing. The front chainring is 40 and the cassette is 11-42. I would like some easier gears but there doesn't seem to be a 11-44/46 cassette so it looks like my only choice is a 38 front ring. I'm not sure but I think it may be possible to run a MTB rear derailleur / cassette with the existing shifting - is this possible? Thanks
It's possible but smaller chainring is way easier unless it's wireless
Sunrace do an 11/46 cassette, it's what I use on my gravel bike. Works fine with a Rival 1 rear mech.

Only used on an MTB, but very durable IMO.
On my old Camino that came with a 40t chain ring and the regular 12/42 cassette.
I swapped out the chain ring for an ultimate black oval 38t ring and found it a great improvement.
at least enough to get me around the Pennine hills at least.

I ran an 11-46 for a while with no problem on Rival.
I then switched to an 11-51 and the Ratio Technology long cage which is perfect.
(They also do the bits to allow you to modify your shifter to work with an Eagle mech and 12 speed).
I run a 38T chainring but have a 32 to go on for the Badger Divide in a couple of weeks.
Thanks all, great information. Think I'll try the front 38 ring first as its cheaper. Last question and probably very stupid but are 11-42/46 considered as MTB or road cassettes ( just want to check width compatibility with my hub )

Been running an E-Thirteen Helix 9-46 cassette on Force 1x mechanical for a few months (with a 40t oval chainring) - works well. Quick enough on the road, good range for lumpy bits, though have thought about running a 38 for really lumpy bits…
Standard long cage mech works fine, though it does need an XD freehub. Not particularly cheap either.
