[#8469323]

Me and a group of mates are doing the Trans Cambrian in May, starting on a Friday from Knighton.

In my awesome wisdom I had got the start day confused, thinking it was Thursday and have booked a B&B for the Wednesday night (Thursday night is included in the package), so we've "unfortunately" got 2 days of riding to figure out ๐Ÿ˜†

What is there pretty close to Knighton to kill a couple of days?

There's a few routes in the Vertebrate guide that are fairly close - obviously don't do the Elan Valley ones as you'll be riding through there on the TCW.

I did the TCW at the end of March - felt quite remote even though you are only a mile or so from habitation at any point, only saw six people apart from when I stopped for grub in Rhayader.

Depends where you're arriving from, but Long Mynd is the obvious one for the one day. Just up the road in Church Stretton. Not far from the Beacons either if you were coming in from the south east.

We're coming down from Cheshire, so maybe Long Mynd on the way down and then something more local on Thursday.

I can definitely recommend trying Hopton. Plenty to amuse yourself in there for a day and close to Knighton. If you want some really steep stuff, look out the trails in Bringewood nearer Ludlow.

Hopton is great. Doesn't feel like a trail centre.
Follow the route and try some of the dh runs.
One of the few places where you're straight out the car park into a wicked downhill section.

You can actually ride between there and Bucknell but it's quite a steep lump between them.

Hopton is fun, short xc loop, and dh trails. The xc is a lot of fun.

Bringewood area has a lot of good riding. There are some nice loops in the black mountains. I know there are some loops around Radnor Forest but I've never ridden them.

The long mynd is fun.
