Had a bit of a result and looks like I am off to Sicily for a conference at the end of September.
Looking at the program I will have a few half days to myself. The offered excursions include vinyards and godfather tours. Having never ridden anywhere in mainland Europe this seems like an amazing chance.

Any experience, suggestions or links?

Not ridden yet in Sicily but you'll need to go out early because it'll still be bloody hot in the day and sticky in the evening ๐Ÿ™‚ have fun

Nothing around Etna everything around there has been wiped out by volcanic lava. Been twice, I'd take my road bike its a great place to explore.

Round down Etna, bloody fantastic, drop these people an email, triridemtb.com, they took me up for a half day cycling and they do cheaper guided tours. Your never likely to be able to cycle down a volcano again...
