The wife and I are thinking about moving there later this year to be nearer my family following the arrival of our little boy in may this year. It breaks my heart that he's missing out on time with his grandparents. Other than Thetford is there any half decent riding in Suffolk and Essex or should I buy a touring bike and saddlebag!?

I seem to find enough to keep me interested around Ipswich. At least 3 25 mile routes from the door with about 300m+ of climbing in them to keep things interesting. The mud to the West is clay based and hard going in winter and rutted with permanent hoofprints in summer.

We could have shown you some great trails today, 130 others seemed to enjoy it! Have a look here to get started:

We don't have an abundance of rocky downhills, but there's plenty of good offroading around if you know who to ask ๐Ÿ˜‰

In central Essex there is Thorndon/Weald around Brentwood. Thorndon offers loads of twisty singletrack with a few proper climbs. Weald is a nice place to ride with the family and has a few good trails hidden away.

Just east of Chelmsford there is Danbury; it's full of trails with a few mini DH tracks and lot and lots of singletrack. It's the biggest hill in the area and is criss-crossed with bridal paths, footpaths and cheeky trails.

Lots of quiet country lanes interspersed with some lovely country pubs if that is your thing.

Not the most amazing place to live but it could be worse....

thanks very much all. If I can find some work a move looks likely rather than maybe. I grew up near Ipswich riding rendlesham and tunstall way in the days when a lightweight rigid bike weighed 30 lbs! Anything on that was a tough ride.

I think there are plenty of riding spots around here. Its just a case of knowing where they are. And judging by the replies on here, you're in the right place to get to know them!

I know Colchester very well, I lived in East Colchester and used to ride around Halstead Woods, Birch, Lexden etc.
