I'll soon be in Brackley for around a week. Will probably take the CX bike. Is there much scope for any form of off-road riding around there?

no, there's pretty much nothing at all off road. It's all field edges.
take some road tyres.

I was in Bicester this time last year, ended up taking my ht and driving down the M40 to Watlington (20 mins from Bicester Junction)and caning it round the Chilterns, loved it, riding Monday to Thursday every week for 3 weeks.

I'm not too far from Brackley - if its dry(ish) there is some stuff local to me that's good fun for an hour or so.
Otherwise your best bet it drive south to the Chilterns. Or East to Woburn.
