I went through Cranleigh a few weeks ago and saw a group of riders on the main high street gathering around. What is there to ride around there?

The whole of the Surrey Hills most likely. Are you saying you ride mountain bikes, live near Cranleigh and don't know about the Surrey Hills?

If so, boy have I got some great news for you! ๐Ÿ˜€

Of course I ride in the Surrey Hills, I was just wondering if there was anything nearer Cranleigh, as the guys I saw would still have had to ride to Peaslake.

Never ceases to amaze me how keen some people are the to ride on road either!

Why? Peaslake isn't the centre of the universe, and in any rate is only about 6 miles!

You can go up past Cranleigh school and up onto Winterfold through Alderbrook. Not aware of groups meeting in the centre of Cranleigh mind.

You think Cranleigh to peaslake is a long way?

Admittedly I used to ride with someone who couldn't comprehend riding from Ewhurst to Peaslake, and always drove. I wonder about some people.

Some people think Peaslake to the top of Holmbury is a long way. Golden Birdies/BKB uplift anyone?

It was a joke guys, although when you only have limited time to ride there is an argument for missing out even a few miles of road riding if it means you get to the off road bits quicker.

Sorry, my comment was aimed at:

as the guys I saw would still have had to ride to Peaslake.

You don't have to start a ride at Peaslake, hence the centre of the universe comment.

I take it you don't ride very far then? Like everyone has said already, Peaslake and all the other trails are only a few miles away.

Blimey. Have to drive to Peaslake?

Have you looked at a map at all? Just ride out of Cranleigh, turn left up that road up to Winterfold (which is a bugger on a road bike, but a doddle in the granny ring) - hey presto you're there.

Chill out guys, I was simply asking a question. Me and my friends usually ride from Guildford anyway.

Sorry for asking whether there is anything else to ride in Surrey.

Ahh - you mean it was legit?

So many good points there for our less successful trolls to take account of - particularly the implicit rubbishing of the Surrey Hills in the first post - if that's not going to get a reaction nothing will.

I was so impressed I made you this

Sorry OP!

It's not really mountain biking, as we now think of it, but the Downslink will get you to the South Downs in a couple of hours - turning right and riding to QE Park and then into Petersfield gets you to a train station to get back to Guildford. Nice long day out of the old school variety.

Good grief! The OP's original question was perfectly clear and I would have thought instead of all the sarcasm a simple "No, there's nothing in/around Cranleigh until one gets up toward the top of Winterfold" would have been more helpful?

I think the confusion for me at least stems from the fact that Cranleigh is basically in the Surrey Hills, there couldn't really be any more riding between Cranleigh and Winterfold as they're virtually one and the same place!

Also, the shop at Smithbrook Kilns do rides, don't they? If I were looking for new routes around Cranleigh, that's where I would ask.

I do have to confess, it is rather easy for me to say that you can just ride to Surrey Hills, since I don't actually have to ride any distance at all! Having said that, If I were going out around Box Hill, or North Downs to Riegate etc then I would just ride there - not worth getting the bike in the car. And I can have a few beers!

That's the point though, it's no distance from cranleigh either, just the other end!

Beyond do rides once a month or so, email jackie@beyondmountainbikes.comic you're interested, excellent shop, and a good bunch to ride with. They start from the shop, Peaslake or Leith, there's very little worth riding anywhere else. Hascombe Hill is out to the west, but it's pretty lame, and further than Winterfold etc anyway.

I'm even more spoiled - I can more or less freewheel to Holmbury Hill, or put it another way, I'm half way up Leith Hill.
