At last year's 24hrs of Exposure I got a lovely cheery "Get out of the way, you d--k" from someone who I can only presume to have been one of the leaders
He didn't win, if that helps!
I don't know who it was, but it wasn't me and I can pretty much guarantee that Huw wouldn't have said anything like that...so whoever it was didn't profit from being a dick
Cheers Dave, and yes, certainly wasn't me, and having been racing at these events long enough to know most of the top contenders I very much doubt any would say anything like that either. The top guys usually go by with a quick "on your left/right" and they're away.
I've only ever "raced" with an engine, at hare scrambles, but I imagine some of my experience might resonate with some of "the rest of us" who've been passed downhill on an MTB?
When it comes to being overtaken, don't worry about the (other) crap riders, they won't be overtaking. Don't worry about the expert riders, they'll burst into view in your peripheral vision, wheels at hip height, leg cocked in thanks, having ridden up a tree to go round you. Worry about the merely good riders - good enough to want, but not get, past. They ride over you.
Then, one day, you arrive behind (another) crap rider. He checks his shoulder and pulls over, you quickly do likewise - figuring he's seen a looming expert jockeyed death machine skipping along at head height behind you. You stop. You look back. No-one's there. You look forward into the uncomprehending eyes of someone who has in fact stopped ... to let YOU past!? ๐ฎ
(One experience that doesn't translate is on a fast open part, being passed and sprayed with a rooster tail composed entirely of brick sized shards of flint.)
is it time to post that great vid of the guy overtaking by airing over the guy in front?
My favourite memory was Sleepless in 2004, now I'm a fat knacker who is pretty slow, the mobile chicane is apt but people tend not to be unpolite as there's muscle too!
Coming back down to the main ring through the singletrack even I'd been held up and one of the seriously fast chaps had come up behind me, we both burst out across the field and I was on my old Trek Liquid and flew down into the ring together and him then turning round and complementing me on my speed was a great memory. Luckily it was the end of my lap and I was pulling in. But there are some good people out there riding too!
recently I did a 3 day event, day 2 had a multi lap (meant to be down hill but wasn't all that) minimum for overall was 3 laps I was on 5 when someone fresh came up behind me, I offered to pull over, he just said my lines were making it much easier for him...when he passed he thanked me for showing him the better line.
multi lap (meant to be down hill but wasn't all that)
How does a multi-lap downhill work then?
