I've done Garburn pass but fancy another ride from Staveley this Thursday. Having mainly ridden trail centres i'm not an expert when it comes to navigation but I have a map and a basic Garmin. The Garmin was great when I did Garburn so i think a TCX file with a map as a back up would be my best option as I won't have to stop every five minutes to check i'm on course. I'll be on a fat bike and riding alone so don't want an epic ride. Maybe just a few hours. Had been considering trying to have a go at nan bield but i'm unsure if that's wise on my own. Maybe i'd be better off driving somewhere else and doing something low level (iron keld, loughrigg?) Opinions/TCX files welcome.
Gatesgarth and Nan Bield is an obvious (tougher) possibility. Cheeky shortcut over Harter Fell (rather than down to haweswater) is quite possible.
Edit sorry that's probably not what you are after. There are shorter routes over to longsleddale and back, check out the OS map basically.
I'm not the biggest fan of the Green Quarter riding, and it was still a bit squishy in places when I went over on Sunday, not that this would be an issue on a fattie. But there are a few nice descents around the valley other than Garburn - HP Plantation, Three Rivers etc
Seems a shame not to bob over to Garburn if you're in the area though.
I would be heading into Grizedale or Loughrigg area for simplicity and non-epicness if it was me, though.
Gatesgarth, harter fell, nan bield is the route I was thinking of really after reading recommendations on here. Well that and skiddaw were my initial ideas.
Loughrigg might be a more sensible idea this time though and save the others for when I'm not out alone.
I've got the VG book too. Are the grizedale/loughrigg routes in it worth doing or should I look for a better one?
Nothing mega exposed on Nan bield going north to south. South to north might be a bit hairy but up gatescarth and back over kentmere would be fine.
Check the wind though, it fair whistles through the pass and theres no shelter on harter fell
