Amusingly, one of the reasons given by a signatory to this waste of time was as follows:

one a couple weeks ago "fYcking get off the F&cking roads cycling knobs"
actually can see how frustrating it must be if you live in that area... lots of cyclists, clubs and sportives..
but again all for 'sport' does not help the improving general infrastructure case..
soon they will be a road rage incident where a motorist runs cyclists over in the surrey hills

There was a much less lycra-focused Saturday event with ~50000 people riding a loop round the sights in central London on their shopper bikes or whatever, a couple of friends I was staying with did it and they had a fun day out. Plus the crits on Saturday night and the pro road race on Sunday afternoon... whole thing was a pretty well thought out package actually.
For the sake of idle curiosity here's the spread of times from Sunday to show how quick it was:

Dunno about that one, but similar histograms for marathons aren't smooth as people push to get under certain specific times.

It's an area where kids get banned from walking or biking to school because of motor traffic, ffs:

can see it sometimes though if people drive up from say Sheer and there is a sportive on or lots of roadies out (that is me).
a period of adjustment perhaps is needed.. bit like the lady you takes pictures of all the cyclists outside the shop in peaslake.. i think she has a fetish.

Those times are staggeringly fast - my PB for a century is about 5:30, which would only put me in the middle of that bell curve. Yet I'm usually faster than average when I do sportives, so what's going on?

Conditions were perfect. No Wind, closed roads and some big groups, very flat and the roads were quick (go condition)
Done. Quite surprised at the reasonable entry fee too!

Your worried. Mine's 6:09. Although that was before I started club riding & proper training etc so I'd hope I could improve on that...

I'm in again. Completed last week's in 4hrs 36 mins without too much bother. I'm aiming for 4:15 next year, a bit of specific training and (hopefully) an earlier start time so I don't get tangled up in as much traffic on Leith and Box Hills should help matters!

... a bit of specific training...I've started some road training (by coincidence) 5 weeks ago. I need to get out and do a few more centuries, but more importantly change my century route so that I don't back go past my house after the first 60k, its not good for motivation.....

Good to know! It would be great to dip under 5 hours, but that does rely on groups working together.
I think everybody was surprised with their times. For example there are few guys in the club who are fit but not amazing and most if not all dipped under the 5 hour mark.

Timings - as others have said it's amazing what you can do on closed roads and a flattish circuit like that.
