I've bought a pair of the discounted 2012 Revelation RT3 29'ers from CRC and just taken the lowers off to remove the air spring and reduce the travel and the anodizing on the stanchions are stained where the wipers and seals sit. There was a resonable amount of oil in the lowers but the foam wipers dont have much of the red rum left on them and they are almost white. The surfaces feel fine but should I just back these to CRC as a warranty issue? The forks are unused so if the staining is a problem I can't see they have much of a case not to change them. I'm dropping the travel to 120mm so the stains will all be well under the seals within the stanchions when assembeled.

Mine have that, they're run at 140mm all the time so when you stretch them to 150mm or take the lowers off, you can see a tide mark. It doesn't make any difference as far as I can tell though it's a wee bit unsightly.

Sometimes the colour of the anodising varies/looks stained, cleaning products can also cause this.

Have seen some quad shocks washed with neat road film clearer/truckwash which we're so much stained as ano disolved where it had run down the stantion 😯

Hmmm, doesn't sound too good to me. A couple of my friends' Revs of that vintage have died as a result of the coating coming off on the back of the NDS stantion. They ended up leaking and no warranty available, the only helpful suggestion from Fishers was to buy a new steerer/crown/stantion assembly.

Have a peek at my previous thread. Is it similar? Fishers/SRAM Tech said mine was nothing to worry about - ghosting in the anodising.

I'd be cheesed off if I'd bought new forks and they had this problem. I'd be sending them back.

Do CRC buy up 'grey' stock like Merlin? That could be the answer.

daveh that's the kind of thing except mine have neat rings where the wipers are and where the oil sat at the bottom, not the fetching leopard print!

chesterrockwell, definitely grey stock, uncut steerer but came in a plain box without the shock pump etc.

I know what the sensible thing to do is but it’s just a pain now I’ve dropped the bottoms and reduced the travel!

Perhaps I should have bought the cheap Marzocchi’s I was pondering over instead of these!

Shame, I really like my Revs on my other bike

I've got a set of 2006 Pikes with similar 'stains'. Not been an issue. Same, but less noticable, on my latest set of 2012 Sektors too.

I guess that's why they can knock them out at the price they do then.

The Revs I got from Merlin had small marks under the the stantion finish. Don't think they affected performance but it annoyed me so I got my money back in the end. Did you save enough for it not to matter?

This whole grey/seconds/returns issue wouldn't bother me if the shops were up front about it and said as much in the ad. They'd still sell them and save themselves some bother. What really ****s me off though is that they try to pass them off as brand new and just the same as the ones you'll get at your lbs for full rrp. 👿

Just state the product my have slight blemishes or imperfections that don't affect performance or that they're OEM stock. It's not hard.

Since they are 2012, could it just be that they've sat in a warehouse with the seals/rings in the same place for over a year?

Could be, could not. My point still stands.
