I came across this picture from the summer of 1990 the other day.
It was taken at the Sheffield round of the NEMBA series. The course was regarded as being highly technical and there were a number of pro/elite riders who were reputed to have complained that the course was too difficult.
I think I came around 14th in the junior category. The bike is a Saracen Traverse although by that time the wheels had been changed to Mavic MA40s on Mavic hubs; the bars were Salsa Tue Temper staight steel, cut down to incey weeny sub 20". The tyres are also a bit of a joke these days - 1.5" Spesh Hardpacks!
Tangent & his Saracen Trekker to the thread, please.
I used to love those 1.5" Hardpacks. Now you wouldnt even dream of using something so narrow...
1.5 hard packs
great in sticky clay. Fast on the road. I think I did a time trial with them on once!
Hardpacks were great in mud - cut straight through to the hard stuff. Running them with a Pace rigid ally fork and I-Beam stem was a tad harsh though!
Bring back the Hardpack's I say!
