[Closed] Restoring an old bike that had 80mm forks? What fork?!

[#10700418]

An old bike that had SIDs 80-85mm forks is being restored but I’m scratching my head about fork options?

I tried a brand new set of Reba U turns 85-115mm dialled to 85mm but it felt slack and almost a pogo stick.

Also found out my LBS fitted a conventional headset into a semi integrated frame. It’s solid but wonder if that needs swapping out.

Anyway should I just strip and sell or can I buy a corrected fork?

I suspect the pogo stick effect is what really put you off rather than the fairly small head angle change mate?

You can always go rigid.

Not at my age these days.

surely the pogo stick effect is down to the forks performance, not the change in head angle.

If it originally came with Sids, that would be the obvious choice if you want to keep it performing how it was.

I'd be surprised if Rebas at 85 mm were so much longer than 80 mm Sids that you would even notice it riding the bike. The "pogo" thing sounds like it's a damping issue. Do the damping adjusters on the Reba help?

Are the Reba's old dual air models with the Floodgate? If so, you have a lot of adjustment with positive and negative air pressures and the Floodgate setting. Try running them locked out, but the Floodgate set at a very low threshold. They will be stiff on smooth pedaling sections, but open up when you hit a bump.

The headset itself may be the problem - it'll have raised the front end enough to make the difference in geometry felt on a short travel bike. It's also well worth measuring the dropout to crown length on the old SIDs and the Rebas to see if there's a significant difference.

As for the fork performance, a pogoing Rockshox could be the result of a blown seal in the compression circuit, which dumps the damping oil into the lower leg - I've had this myself with early Pikes once or twice. It's a relatively easy fix so I'm told.

Hi, it was new U turns that I bought but never got round to fitting.

I think it’s mainly the head angle as
I whipped on some old Pace 31’s 420mm
and it felt normal, rigid but fast. I’d want more give though.

I’ll measure the forks to see how long they are and suspect 440mm.

I’ve just bought another CX bike and it’s addictive.

Might just pull the bike apart and take it to the jumble.

Oh it’s a 01’Zaskar Easton frame. More like a road bike but everything has 27.5” which won’t fit it.

Are you sure the "pogo" isn't just "working forks"?

Loads of people running old forks haven't even dropped the lowers in years and have very sticky suspension (or "friction platform damping", if you prefer).

It might be worth playing with the compression damping (if adjustable) if you dislike that feeling, but want some give on bigger stuff though. Otherwise just lock it out except when you're descending. And if it's too bouncy there add some rebound damping.

keep it, or sell/give it away it on retrobikes.

maybe an old pair of fox float 120RLC?
You can put spacers in to take it down to 100 or maybe even less

Right after tripping over my bikes.

I just thought sod it and just tore apart some of my retro bikes.

About to strip the Zaskar and it would be nice to finish as a project but I prefer road and CX now.

Keeping the pedals but unbolting the XTR 970 stuff. Had some funny memories with it and had it resprayed Ferrari Red.

I just hope the forks don’t have the split ring where you need a puller!

I could mount the frame on the wall but I’m an ex hoarder. So it’s gotta go!

That would leave me 3 road bikes and a CX bike.
